The mind of Maurice Fulton

March 4, 2011 by Al

In 2008 DFA records introduced an album “I’ve Got My Eye on You” from a new Scandinavian band called “Syclops”. They were a three piece disco funk group comprised of unknowns Sven Kortehisto, Hann Sarkari and Jukka Kantonen. After the success of the record they were approached for interviews, live shows and various requests from a now excited music community. Following much press probing it got out that Sven, Hann and Jukka were a mere smokescreen for a secret project of experimental solo producer Maurice Fulton.

Before information was so easily available online all we didn’t know about our favourite artists fueled our excitement. For this reason I hugely admire acts that attempt to hold on to the intrigue. Those who use pseudonyms and fake back stories for a purpose of setting a scene around their music.

In a similar vein, I saw Fulton play last year in the Button Factory where he insisted that all the stage lights be turned off so there was no focal point of the night…no stage to face. Clearly this is a man who thinks a lot about how we experience music…whether it be a new band, a back story or stage presence, he’s keen to explore different ways of being listened to.

Maurice Fulton hails from New York but has lived in the UK for a number of years. He is lauded as being one of the most respected disco DJs around and in his wake has left a wide range of releases. His own productions are groove driven with heavy jazz and funk influences. He often uses live instrumentation with his wonky drum sequences and harsh synth lines. Although he has also completed over 100 remixes for folk like Chk, Chk, Chk, Ricardo Villalobos, Simian Mobile Disco, Chicken Lips and The Rapture among others his most commercially successful release is probably “Paris Hilton” by Mu (shown below) a two piece group that he formed with his wife Mutsumi.

Tomorrow in a more intimate basement affair Maurice returns to Dublin to perform a Dj set to celebrate Downtown Sounds 10th Birthday. A booking which in the past has created one of my favourite mixes of all time (see below).
