Vintage Irish Book Covers

They, whoever they are, say you should never judge a book by its cover. However for years I have been buying charity shop gems, not for their reading content, but just because I like the design and print of the front sleeve. Niall McCormack aka Hi-tone has taken a similar obsession to a new level and created a blog in homage to the Vintage Irish Book Cover. Behold an ever growing museum of Ireland’s sleeve design.

Recently he posted a series of beauties dating from 1966-1970 that were designed by Des Fitzgerald for Logo’s Books and published by Gill and Macmillian. The series were interestingly, “Launched in the years following the Second Vatican Council, the cover art reflects the Church’s unlikely embracing of Modernism”
