Really nice interactive project from London based branding and design agency OPX. In their own words, “London has a rich source of publicly available type and lettering. The aim of London Typographica is to document this typographic landscape, all in one place” With the help of a free smart phone App, you can photograph and upload your favourite found typography and help build a realtime map of your city.

Cardon Webb is a modern hero. Under cover of darkness, Webb uses his spare time and design skills to improve the homemade fliers/posters in his neighborhood. His enigmatic interventions greatly increase the chance of you getting your cat back or filling that vacant room in your apartment. Using his brains to do his bit for the community. Good Job.

We are gonna start the week with some beautiful illustration from french native Malika Favre. Malika has been living in the UK for the last 7 years with 4 of them spent working at design company Airside. Her striking use of simple palettes, negative space and flat colour has gained her contracts from magazines such Creative Review , Little White Lies and Wallpaper and publishing giants Penguin. Artist Lisa Nilsson has perfected the renaissance art of paper quilling. She rolls and loops strips of Japanese Mulberry paper around any item small enough (ie. pins or drill bits) and builds these cross-sectional images as a plan view. The detailing in her anatomical “Tissue Series” are staggering see the rest of the set here.

I’ve often wondered what Beethoven’s music would be like if he could harness the power of modern digital equipment. If Dutch graphic artist MC Escher was around today I would imagine he would be making imagery quite like photographer and photographic retoucher Erik Johansson. Hailing from Sweden Johansson has crafted a style where each photo demands a double take. Enjoy his extensive portfolio here and a see him explain his process here.

Mixtapes have long been a medium of romantic advancement. A way generations of bourgeoning couples could shyly communicate through the words or music of others. This short piece from Radiolab explains a mixtape of truly global proportions and the accidental romance that grew from it.

In 1977 NASA sent to two Voyager satellites into orbit and commissioned a record plotting our human existence through audio. The hope was to communicate Earth’s diversity of civilization to extraterrestrials. The project was called The Golden Record and here the creative director Ann Druyan explains the story that surrounds it.

Big congratulations to Lorcan Finnegan and Lovely Productions for winning an Irish Film & Television Academy award for their short film FOXES. I was lucky enough to catch the premiere of the short at the Cork Film Festival last November and the spooky tale really stood out in the company of many other great Irish short films. Keep an eye out for it at a film festival near you.

This day in 1824 and inventor called Samuel Plimsoll was born. Plimsoll invented a simple graphic that has since saved millions of lives. Roman Mars from 99% Invisible recorded a short show in Samuel’s honour. Today on his birthday take a moment to learn about him and his fine idea.
